By: Ollie |Eintracht Frankfurt’s Bundesliga life is on the line as Energie Cottbus comes to Waldstadion Saturday afternoon. With Friedhelm Funkel’s efforts hampered this year with countless injuries this will be a bare-fist battle against the Lausitz side and far from “welcoming”.
There are a number of late decisions to be made for Eintract including the final decision of whether Oka Nikolov or Markus Pröll. Herr Funkel is not letting any news out in these key match although given that Nikolov is saying he is healthy, it is most likely that the Macedonian veteran will once again guard the posts.
Zlatan Bajramović, Ümit Korkmaz und Martin Fenin returned from international duty with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria and Czech Republic respectively fully-fit and should be ready for this crucial match. In addition Nikos Liberopoulos’ involvement will come down to a late decision.
Led by Bojan Prašnikar, Energie, plays with intensity and can never be counted out. Their Slovenia manager uses a tight defensive approach and looks to attack through a counter that includes strikers Dimitar Rangelov, Emil Jula and Serbian Ivica Iliev. Their lineup could be hindered with five players returning from international play including Bajramović’s Bosnian teammate Ivan Radeljić, Montenegro’s Savo Pavićević, Bulgaria’s Dimitar Rangelov and Stanislav Angelov in addition to Albania’s Ervin Skela.
No time for question-marks, time for victory and as always the best supporters in Germany must shake the walls. Our team needs us for loud support and Cottbus can not be welcomed.

Eintracht left Düsseldorf with a relatively satisfying 1-1 draw to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. While short of a victory, the point adds space to the drop zone and most importantly, saw the return of Zlatan Bajramović after being out for fifteen months.
Eintracht took the lead sixteen minutes after the start when after Renato Augusto lost the ball to Martin Fenin, the Czech Republic international executed a strong run down the left flank before crossing to Alexander Meier, who after a fortunate bounce drove the ball in from five metres. However the match lacked any significant scoring chances until Leverkusen drew it level five minutes prior to the half as Tranquillo Barnetta’s corner found Michal Kadlec who was able to send the ball in from close range. Opportunities were coming at a fast pace and Eintracht rode their luck as Stefan Kießling hit the crossbar a few minutes after. After the restart Friedhelm Funkel’s side came out with restored confidence and nearly scored the winner on the hour with Ümit Korkmaz’s challenging free-kick as well as a last breath efforts by Habib Bellaïd and Caio that seemed destined for the net. However each was held back by Leverkusen goalkeeper René Adler and the match ended as a 1-1 draw. While the injury situation is still in a difficult situation, the return of Zlatan Bajramović is a major boost for Eintracht.
Eintracht starke und aggressive
By: Ollie |Eintracht held 1899 to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon that while not completely satisfying, given the difficult injury situation there is a great deal to be said of the result and how they played the second half with aggression. In the match Friedhelm Funkel had few changes although he handed Sebastian Jung his first assignment in the starting eleven and the eighteen year-old showed extremely well in Patrick Ochs forced absence.
The match did not start well for those at Commerzbank Arena as Hoffenheim attacked at will early on. Under siege from the opening whistle Oka Nikolov did well to ward off 1899 but was helpless ten minutes in when Marvin Compper’s long pass to Carlos Eduardo was chipped over and into the net. The visitors swarmed endlessly looking for their next goal and without a serious threat Eintracht was on their heels for most of the first forty-five. With three minutes left to the whistle the situation took an ominous tone as Oka Nikolov had to be replaced by Markus Pröll due to injury. Coming back from a chorus of whistles at the break die Adler changed their course 180° and found the equalizer as Markus Steinhöfer’s cross from distance we headed in by Michael Fink from ten metres. Quickly the match had a different tone as where the attacking tables had turned and Alexander Meier and Markus Steinhöfer created a number of solid link-ups in the attack. With their packed home behind them Eintracht looked for the winner and nearly had it in the final twenty minutes when Martin Fenin’s shot cannoned off the crossbar from twelve metres however it was not to be and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Eintracht returns home against 1899 Hoffenheim
By: Ollie |Treading too close to the drop zone Eintracht returns home against 1899 Hoffenheim on Saturday in search of a victory. Escaping Bielefeld with a goalless draw, Eintracht know the Baden-Württemberg team are ripe for an upset and that points will provide further safety to a surging bottom portion of the table.
Since the start of the Rückrunde, Ralf Rangnick’s team have barely resembled their early season form with only one win and without a goal in the previous two matches. Four points off first place now, 1899’s potent attack has disappeared with the loss of Vedad Ibišević, Sejad Salihović and now Chinedu Obasi to injury.
Last week against der schwarz-weiß-blauen Friedhelm Funkel was able to re-introduce Ümit Korkmaz into the lineup and the Austrian international fared well with Alexander Meier and Nikola Petković. With a more attacking focus at home, the biggest debate will once again be between Caio or Alexander Meier.

Eintracht’s visit of the Bielefeld ended in a goal-free draw with the result causing both teams too close for comfort with respect to relegation. Due to injuries and suspensions Friedhelm Funkel had to shift his starting eleven around and brought in Markus Steinhöfer and Junichi Inamoto as well as replacing Markus Pröll in goal with Oka Nikolov.
German U21 Daniel Halfar posed the best early attempt by the Bielefelder sixteen minutes in but his drive from eighteen metres was denied by Nikolov. Eintracht nearly took the lead midway of the half as Michael Fink’s cross into the box was missed by Léonard Kweuke. Following the miss both sides played error free and did not allow another scoring chance.
Austrian Ümit Korkmaz came in for Junichi Inamoto to add great attacking intensity
but it wasn’t to the hour mark that die Adler showed some creative instinct, however Nikola Petković probing cross didn’t provide the deadly intent needed. On the other end of the pitch, the twenty-two year old Serbian saved a clear goal scoring chance nearing Markus Bollmann. In the final fifteen minutes, traveling Eintracht fans rose in support as Herr Funkel support as eighteen year-old Sebastian Jung entered for fellow club product Patrick Ochs and was error free as the match ended in a goal-less draw. No longer an apprentice, Sebastian has arrived!

With the disappointing loss to Schalke behind Eintracht, die Adler look down the barrel win an important contest on Sunday against DSC Arminia Bielefeld. DSC coach Michael Frontzeck has led his team to an hard-nosed start of the Rückrunde, grinding out draws to Hannover 96, Hertha BSC, Bochum and Köln as well as defeating Werder. The seven points have pushed them narrowly out of the relegation zone.
Never one to give away too much information Friedhelm Funkel is concerned with the health of Faton Toski and Martin Fenin for Sunday although the Czech striker Fenin is likely to be fit. Nikos Liberopoulos will definitely not be available as is Mehdi Madhavikias because of a family emergency. Marco Russ will miss out because of yellow-card accumulation and Martin Fenin, Benjamin Köhler and Michael Fink are only one away from missing next weeks home engagement against 1899 Hoffenheim. Between the posts both Oka Nikolov und Markus Pröll make the trip north but Jan Zimmermann is with the U23 side. Leonard Kweuke, Kresoi Ljubicic and Ümit Korkmaz all vie for a starting assignment but based upon last week and practices, the Austrian Korkmaz is most likely to be in opening eleven.
DSC will be missing Leonidas Kampantais and Mannschaft capped Tobias Rau with Michael Lamey questionable although they do have vocal captain Rüdiger Kauf back from suspension. Michael Frontzeck is calling upon schwarz-weiß-blauen supporters to get behind their side and Eintracht should expect a rugged battle with both sides searching for much needed points.
Aleksandar Vasoski out with knee operation

Eintracht announced that Aleksandar Vasoski’s knee was operated by today in Augsburg by renowned surgeon Dr. Ulrich Boenisch. While the club did not reveal significant details with full recovery the Macedonian international should be back within four weeks if all goes well
late goal by Schalke defeats Eintracht

The cruel side of Football showed as a packed Waldstadion witnessed a late goal by Schalke spoil Eintracht’s comeback in route to a 2-1 defeat.
Looking for the right attacking mix, Friedhelm Funkel brought Caio and Alexander Meier in for Mehdi Mahdavikia and Nikola Petković. The lineup worked early as intended as the majority of attacking efforts came for Eintracht. That aside, Schalke took the lead in a quick counter when Jefferson Farfán’s long pass to Rafinha was driven into the net just past Markus Pröll. Unable to break through Fred Rutten’s tough defensive tactics Ümit Korkmaz and Markus Steinhöfer entered the match for Leonard Kweuke and Caio past the hour. The Austrian Korkmaz flourished in the attack and with nine nine minutes remaining Michael Fink headed Steinhöfer’s well placed cross in from close range to bring the match even. Looking like the draw had been salvaged Eintracht supporters were shocked when Schalke marched quickly down the pitch and Heiko Westermann scored the winner two minutes later. Eintracht poured forward in added time with Chris’ effort close but it didn’t come the match ended in a 2-1 defeat.
Eintracht look to build on victory

Following last weeks victory over Karlsruhe, Eintracht has gained important breathing room on the bottom of the table. With Schalke 04’s visit of the Waldstadion die Adler will need to be on top of their game and have the typical strong support from the stands to come out with full points.
Injuries continue to plague Eintracht coach Friedhelm Funkel as both Nikos Liberopoulos and Martin Fenin have been out of the training the last few days and the final decision on availability will come prior to the match. It is too early for Zlatan Bajramović, Christoph Preuß, Christoph Spycher and Ioannis Amanaditis but Austrian international Ümit Korkmaz is a strong possibility.
When asked of Schalke’s strength in his pre-match press conference, Herr Funkel emphasized their aerial ability:
“With Kurányi, Westermann, Bordon, Höwedes, Engelaar and Rakitić they have very stronog and good aerial players.”
